The story of Asma
Asma bint Abi Bakr carried provisions to Muhammad and her father hiding in the cave during the migration to Medina, tearing her waistband in two to tie the bundle — which earned her the epithet 'she of the two belts'. She lived to be about a hundred. The name is used across the Muslim world and is in current American use.

Usually read as the Arabic asma', the plural of ism, 'name' — as in al-asma' al-husna, the beautiful names of God. A second reading takes it from asma, the feminine elative of sami, 'high' or 'exalted'. Both are genuine Arabic and both are given by classical sources.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
