Where it comes from

The story of Asmaa

Asmāʾ bint Abi Bakr was a companion of the Prophet, the daughter of the first caliph and the sister of Aisha, and is remembered for carrying provisions to the Prophet and her father while they hid during the migration to Medina — an act that earned her the epithet Dhat an-Nitaqayn, she of the two belts. That story keeps the name in continuous use across the Muslim world. It appears in American records under several romanisations, and the aa spelling, peaking in 2013, is the one favored where the final hamza is being preserved.

Meaningscholars disagree

Arabic "names"; also read as "high, lofty"

Asmāʾ is the broken plural of ism, a name. That is the standard reading. A second derivation takes it from the root s-m-w, to be high, which gives samāʾ, sky, and asmā as an elative meaning higher or more exalted — and the two roots are historically related, which is why both readings circulate. The final letter is a hamza, and the doubled a in this romanisation is an attempt to represent it.

Two syllables with the stress on the second and a long final vowel closed by a glottal stop that English drops entirely. American speakers say AZ-muh, shortening everything, which is a considerable distance from the Arabic.

Asmaa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2013, with 48 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is unusual and specific — a name that means names.
  • It has a well-documented seventh-century bearer with a memorable story.
  • It is short, two syllables, with no consonant English cannot produce.
What to consider
  • The doubled a is read as a typo by English speakers.
  • Asma is the more common romanisation in America.
  • The English clipping is unfortunate and worth anticipating.
