Karman
Feminine · “garden”
Karman is given to both — 597 girls and 66 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Karman is Carmen wearing two disguises. The K makes it look Germanic and the final n, with that K in front, makes it look like a surname — there is a well-known Hungarian one spelled almost this way. Underneath is a Spanish name that comes from a mountain in the Holy Land, and it is given here almost entirely to girls.

The story of Karman
The Carmelite friars took their name from Mount Carmel, brought the devotion to Spain, and Spanish families began naming daughters for the Virgin under that title — which is how a Hebrew word for a garden became one of the most-used women's names in the Spanish-speaking world. Bizet's opera made the name internationally famous in the nineteenth century and attached a set of associations to it that have nothing to do with its origin. The K-spelling belongs to twentieth-century American naming, where substituting K for a hard C was routine, and here it has a side effect: it makes a Spanish devotional name look like a German or Hungarian family name.

garden; orchard
The Spanish Carmen comes from Nuestra Senora del Carmen, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Carmel is Hebrew karmel, a garden or a planted field — the ridge in northern Israel where the Carmelite order began. The competing reading takes Carmen as the Latin word for a song or a charm, which is a real word and a false trail; the name reaches Spanish through the mountain, not through the poetry. The two have been confused for so long that the song reading turns up in reference books, which does not make it right.

Pronouncing Karman
KAR-mun
KAR-mun, two syllables, stress at the front, the second vowel reduced — said exactly like Carmen. Spanish gives it a fuller second vowel, KAR-men, with both syllables sounded clearly, and that is the reading it will get in a Spanish-speaking room.

The Filippa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Karman's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Filippa climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Filippa's path sketches the road Karman is walking now.
Karman sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely familiar and needs no introduction in English or Spanish.
- It goes to girls almost entirely but is on record for boys, which keeps a door open that Carmen has largely closed in English.
- The devotional history behind it is documented and specific rather than vague.
- Carmen is the spelling the world uses, and this one will be rewritten as that on nearly every document.
- With a K and an -an ending it reads as a surname to English eyes, and it will occasionally be treated as one on a list.
- It also lands very close to the Sanskrit word karma, which is not related and will be assumed to be.
