Where it comes from

Our story of Arionna

The Arion story deserves telling because Herodotus tells it so carefully. Arion of Methymna was the most celebrated singer of his age and had made a fortune touring Italy and Sicily. Sailing home to Corinth, the crew decided to rob and kill him; he asked to sing one last time in full costume, sang the highest of his songs, and threw himself into the sea. A dolphin carried him to Cape Taenarum. When the ship reached Corinth, the tyrant Periander asked after Arion, the sailors said he was safe in Italy, and Arion stepped out in the same costume. Herodotus adds that a small bronze of a man on a dolphin stood at Taenarum in his own day, which is his way of saying he is reporting rather than vouching. Whether or not that history reaches this name, it is available to anyone who wants it.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Two possibilities. Greek Arion is the name of the poet and of a divine horse in myth; its own etymology is not established, though a connection to an intensifying prefix ari- is proposed. The alternative is that Arionna is a respelling of Ariana, which descends from Ariadne — ari- plus a second element usually read as 'holy', giving 'most holy'. The doubled n points towards the second. Neither route is documented for the American name.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Arionna went to 19 girls in 2025, but Ariyonna is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 25, which makes it the 935th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,181 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 64,291 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Arionna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
