The story of Odilia
The High German consonant shift is one of the most consequential sound changes in European linguistics: it separates German from Dutch, English and the Scandinavian languages, and it is why English has water and German has Wasser, English day and German Tag. Names crossed the same line: Odilia in the Low Countries, France and the Romance south, Ottilie in Germany proper. Saint Odilia of Alsace, abbess of Hohenburg and patron of the blind, sits almost exactly on the boundary, which is why both forms circulate. Odilia reached United States records with German, Dutch and Mexican families and had its best year in 1940.
Meaning
wealth, fortune, inheritance
From the Germanic element od or aud, riches, prosperity or inherited property, with a diminutive ending. The same element appears in Otto, Odette and the Old English Eadweard. The d and t forms are separated by the High German consonant shift, which turned Germanic d into t in the southern dialects and left the northern and Low German ones unchanged.

Line the two peaks up, and Irmalee's path sketches the road Odilia is walking now.
Odilia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
