The name begins as a Germanic compound, Roslindis, and traveled with Germanic speakers into medieval France and Spain, where Rosalinda and Rosaline took shape and the rose reading took hold. English literature gave it real staying power: Spenser used Rosalind in The Shepheardes Calender in the sixteenth century, and Shakespeare used both Rosalind, in As You Like It, and Rosaline, in Love's Labour's Lost and Romeo and Juliet. Rosalyn is the later English respelling, blending Rosalind and Rosaline with the -lyn ending that English has long liked at the close of a woman's name. Once the name reached the Romance-speaking south, speakers heard rosa linda, "lovely rose", and that reading stuck hard enough to shape the spelling. The Rosalyn form sits inside the Rose group of names in most people's ears, whatever the older etymology says.
