The s and z problem runs through English spelling and it is a consequence of history rather than carelessness. Old English had no phonemic z: the s sound was voiced automatically between vowels, so the letter s could safely do both. When French loanwords arrived with a genuine z, and when English lost the automatic voicing rule, the spelling did not adjust. The result is that s in modern English can be either sound and the reader must know the word: busy, easy and rose have z sounds, basin, lesson and dose have s sounds, and nothing in the spelling distinguishes them. Respellings that use z are making a real correction. The same logic produces Rozalyn, Izabella and Jazmine, all of which write the sound that the standard spelling leaves the reader to infer.
