The doubled n is not decoration. In English a doubled consonant tells you the vowel in front of it is short: Janny has the a of hand, and Janey has the a of rain. One letter is doing all of that work, and it is the only thing keeping the two names apart on paper.

Where it comes from

The story of Janny

Dutch makes pet names with -tje, -ke and -ny, and applies them freely to both sexes: Jan gives Jantje and Jannie, Johanna gives Jo, Annie and Janny. Dutch immigrants brought those forms to Michigan, Iowa and New Jersey, and the records show them arriving as full names rather than as shortenings. English-speaking families reached the same spelling from the other side, by clipping Janet or Janice and writing the result with the doubled consonant that English spelling requires. Both roads end at the same five letters, and both are correct.

Meaning

God is gracious

A pet form of Jane or Johanna, both feminines of John, from Hebrew Yochanan: God is gracious. In the Netherlands it is a name in its own right rather than a nickname, built from Jan, which is the Dutch form of John and one of the most given men's names there for centuries.

Two syllables, stress on the first, with a short a. The doubled n is what keeps it from being read as JAY-nee, and it is the whole difference between this name and Janey.

Janny sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 21 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Janny went to 8 girls in 2025, but Jani is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 22, which makes it the 938th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,979 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 73,058 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Janny itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters, two syllables, and the spelling says the vowel correctly.
  • It is a full name in Dutch, so it is not only a shortening.
  • Jan works as a short form and stands alone in several languages.
What to consider
  • Most people will assume it is short for Janet or Janice and will ask what the full name is.
  • Jannie, Janie and Janey are all in use and all sound close enough to be confused.
  • The -y ending reads as informal to some people, which matters more on paper than in person.
