Where it comes from

Our story of Jani

It is worth noticing that the modern respelling habit is not new, only more visible. The mid-century wave changed endings rather than stems: Toni for Tony, Jodi for Jody, Terri for Terry, Randi for Randy, Sandi for Sandy, Jani for Janie. The mechanism is identical to the later one — take a familiar name, change a letter that carries no sound, and produce something that reads as distinct — and so is the effect on the data, a cluster of low-frequency variants around a common parent. What differs is the letter chosen. The 1950s picked -i, which read as modern and slightly informal; the 1990s picked -leigh, -ayden and doubled consonants, which read as elaborate. Jani peaks in 1960, at the center of the first wave.

Meaning

Diminutive of Jane or Janet — Hebrew "Yahweh is gracious"

Jane is the English feminine of John, from French Jehanne. Janet is Jane plus the French diminutive -et, so it means little Jane. Jani is a clip with the -i ending. Separately, Jani is a Finnish and Hungarian men's name, a form of John, and a Sanskrit and Hindi word; the American female name is unrelated to these.

Jani sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1960, with 71 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jani went to 14 girls in 2025, but Janny is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 22, which makes it the 938th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,553 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 73,058 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Jani itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
