Inara
Feminine
Inara belonged first to a goddess of the Hittites, sung in a myth pressed into clay tablets in Anatolia more than three thousand years ago, and it turns up again in modern Latvia as Ināra, a name grandmothers there still carry. Three syllables, all open vowels, with a stress that can fall wherever a family prefers. It looks unusual on the page and reads on sight.

The story of Inara
The oldest trace is Anatolian: Inara appears in Hittite mythological texts, where she is a goddess of the wild creatures of the open country and plays her part in the great serpent myth of Illuyanka. Whether the modern name descends from her or simply meets her at the same spelling has never been established. What is certain is that Ināra became a standard Latvian woman's name in the twentieth century and remains familiar there, and that Inara has been taken up in recent decades by families in Arabic-, Turkish- and Russian-speaking communities as well. In English-speaking countries the spelling also traveled through the science-fiction series Firefly, first broadcast in 2002, whose character Inara Serra introduced it to a wide audience.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Nobody has settled what Inara means. What is documented is where it appears: Inara is the name of a Hittite goddess associated with the wild animals of the steppe, daughter of the storm god in the Illuyanka myth, and Ināra has long been in ordinary use as a Latvian woman's name. Baby-name lists often gloss it as "ray of light" by linking it to the Arabic root behind nūr; the classical Arabic names built on that root are Munira and Nayyira, not Inara, so the connection is a modern one rather than a traceable etymology.
Pronouncing Inara
ih-NAR-uh
Also commonly said ee-NAH-rah, which is closer to the Latvian and Arabic-influenced pronunciations. Both are in real use in the US, so it is worth deciding which one you will offer when people ask.

The Genna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Inara's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Genna climbed just as high around 1986, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Genna's path sketches the road Inara is walking now.
Inara is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Reads as it is spelled for most English speakers, so it survives a phone call, a roll call and a coffee cup with little damage.
- Comes with ready-made short forms — Nara, Ina — that already exist as names in their own right.
- Works in several languages without adjustment: Latvian, Lithuanian, Russian, Turkish and Arabic-speaking families all use it.
- Attested in the ancient Hittite record and in continuous modern Latvian use, so it is neither newly coined nor tied to a single decade.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled. If you want a name whose translation you can state at a christening or explain to a curious eight-year-old, this one will not give you a single answer.
- Two pronunciations circulate — ih-NAR-uh and ee-NAH-rah — and she will spend a lifetime correcting whichever one she does not use, gently and often.
- Nearby spellings will cause mix-ups: Inaya, Inaara, Innara, Inarah and Inari all exist. Expect to spell it aloud more than you expect to.
- It is climbing, and quickly. The near-certainty of being the only Inara in a classroom today is less certain for a child starting school several years from now.
