The story of Rodriquez
Rodrigo Díaz served both Christian and Muslim rulers in eleventh-century Iberia, was exiled twice by Alfonso VI, and took Valencia in 1094, holding it until his death in 1099. The epithet Cid is from sayyid, and Campeador, his other title, is Latin for champion. The Cantar de mio Cid, composed around 1200, is the earliest substantial surviving Spanish poem, and it treats the period's fluid alliances matter-of-factly, which later nationalist readings did not. The Visigothic name Rodrigo itself belonged to the last Visigothic king, defeated in 711. Rodriquez as an American given name peaks in 1975.
