Our story of Doy
A duck decoy in the Netherlands was a pond with curving reed-screened channels leading off it, into which ducks were lured by a trained dog and then driven up a narrowing tunnel of netting. The Dutch called it a kooi, a cage, and the phrase de kooi, the cage, is the likeliest source of the English word, with the article absorbed exactly as it was in alligator and alarm. English then broadened the word to mean anything used to lure. Several of the old duck decoys survive in East Anglia as nature reserves, doing the same job for bird ringers that they once did for the kitchen.

Fashion outlook
Doy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Three letters and one syllable: as quick as a name gets to write and to say.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
- It is read correctly at first sight by everybody.
- Names this short are occasionally rejected by forms and databases.
- It reads as an initial or a nickname to most people, so formal settings will ask.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
