The story of Nickolai
The two elements are both ordinary Greek words that have had long afterlives in English. Nikē appears in Nicodemus, Berenice and Veronica, and on the Athenian acropolis in the temple of Athena Nike; the winged Nike of Samothrace stands in the Louvre. Laos supplies laity, lay and laic, and the distinction between clergy and laity that runs through Western church history. Nicholas traveled east and west from Myra in Asia Minor, becoming one of the most common names in Russia — five tsars bore it in some form — and one of the most common in Western Europe. Nickolai peaks in America in 2015.
Meaning
Greek "victory of the people"
From nikē, victory, plus laos, the people or the common folk. Laos gives ecclesiastical Greek laikos, of the people, which became Latin laicus and English lay and laity. Nikolai is the Russian form; Nickolai is an American respelling. Saint Nicholas of Myra, the fourth-century bishop who became Santa Claus by way of Dutch Sinterklaas, is the reason the name spread across Europe.

About 1 boy in 3,140 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Nickolai itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
