Nikolay
Masculine · “victory of the people”
Nikolay is the Russian form of Nicholas, and the choice between the -ay and -ai endings in English is a transliteration decision rather than a difference in the name. Russian writes it one way; English has never agreed on how to render the final sound. Its American peak is 2010, following post-Soviet migration.

The story of Nikolay
Saint Nicholas of Myra was venerated across the Christian world and is the patron saint of Russia; his name became one of the most common Russian men's names and was borne by two emperors, including the last. Russian literature is full of Nikolais — Gogol, Nekrasov, Rimsky-Korsakov. English-language transliteration of Russian has never been standardized, which is why the same man may appear as Nikolai, Nikolay, Nicolai and Nikolaj across different books. American records carry all of them, and the -ay spelling rose with emigration after 1991.
Meaning
victory of the people
Greek Nikolaos joins nike, 'victory', to laos, 'the people'. Russian took the name through Byzantine Christianity as Nikolai, and the final Cyrillic letter is a short i that English renders as -ai, -ay, -aj or -aï depending on the system. None of these is more correct; they are competing conventions for one sound. The derivation is settled throughout.

About 1 boy in 3,140 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 122,005 for Nikolay itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dare test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nikolay's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dare climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dare's path sketches the road Nikolay is walking now.
Nikolay sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
