Mateusz
Masculine · “Hebrew "gift of Yahweh”
Polish and Czech write the same sounds two completely different ways. Czech uses diacritics — š, č, ř — invented by Jan Hus around 1410; Polish uses digraphs — sz, cz, rz. The two systems record identical sounds, and Mateusz shows the Polish solution.

The story of Mateusz
The spelling schism has a date and an author. Jan Hus, the Bohemian reformer burned in 1415, proposed replacing the clumsy digraphs then in use for Czech with diacritical marks — a dot, later a háček, above the letter — and the reform took hold in Czech and spread to Croatian, Slovene, Latvian, Lithuanian and Slovak. Polish went the other way and kept digraphs: sz, cz, rz, dz, with a few diacritics of its own for different sounds. The result is that Czech Mateuš and Polish Mateusz are the same name written under two rival systems that have been diverging for six centuries. The American figures peak in 1997, with recent Polish immigration.
Meaning
Hebrew "gift of Yahweh"
From Mattityahu, mattat, a gift, plus Yah, the abbreviated divine name — the same ending that closes Isaiah and Jeremiah. Greek made it Matthaios, Latin Matthaeus, and the European forms followed. Mateusz is the Polish form; the sz is a single sound, the sh of ship, written with two letters rather than with a diacritic as Czech does.

Three syllables, stress on the second — Polish stresses the penultimate syllable as a fixed rule. The final sz is a single sh sound, not s followed by z.

The Donnald test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mateusz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Donnald climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Donnald's path sketches the road Mateusz is walking now.
Mateusz sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
