Marie Magdalene Dietrich was born in Berlin in 1901 and contracted her two names into Marlene in her teens; by the 1930s she was internationally famous and the name was everywhere in Germany and beyond. Blends of this kind are ordinary in German naming, which also produced Annemarie, Marlies and Heidemarie, but very few have a documented inventor. The Spanish-speaking world took the name and respelled it, giving Marleni, Marlene and Marleny, with the final i or y that Central American naming favors.
