In the 1620s Franciscan missionaries in New Mexico reported that the Jumano people already knew something of Christianity from a woman in blue who had visited them; Sister María de Jesús de Ágreda, an abbess in Spain, said she had been carried there in spirit many times without leaving her convent, and the 'Lady in Blue' is still part of the region's lore. In Brazil Carolina Maria de Jesus, a single mother in a São Paulo favela, filled notebooks with a diary written on paper she found in the trash; published in 1960 as Quarto de Despejo, it became a bestseller in many languages. In American records the name is usually written as one word.
