Where it comes from

The story of Marlayna

German name-fusion, sometimes called a Rufname compound, produced a whole class of names that look like single words and are really two. Marlene is the best known: Maria plus Magdalena, in use before Marlene Dietrich took it. Annegret is Anna and Margarete. Annemarie, Hannelore, Rosemarie, Lieselotte, Karlheinz, Hansjoachim and Ernstotto all work the same way. The practice was strongest in the first half of the twentieth century and produced names that Germans read as a unit and foreigners read as a mistake. English has almost no equivalent as a legal formation, though the American South's double names come close in function. The difference is that a German compound is written as one word on the birth certificate and treated as one name, while Mary Beth remains two words and two names run together in speech.

Hebrew Miryam and Magdala

Marlayna is an American respelling of Marlena or Marlene, a German fusion of Maria and Magdalena. Maria is Hebrew Miryam, of unknown meaning; Magdalena means of Magdala, a town on the Sea of Galilee. The -ayna spelling writes the same sound as -ena. The peak of this spelling is 1992.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Marlayna went to 10 girls in 2025, but Marlaina is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 19, which makes it the 941st most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,516 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 84,593 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Marlayna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
