Annarose
Feminine · “Hebrew Hannah”
Saint Anne is not in the Bible either. Like Joachim, Mary's mother comes from the Protoevangelium of James, a second-century text the church never canonized and never stopped using. By the fifteenth century she was among the most venerated saints in Europe, with her own feast, her own guilds and her own iconography, all resting on a book nobody claimed was scripture.

The story of Annarose
The cult of Saint Anne grew enormously in the late Middle Ages, and its most distinctive image is the Anna Selbdritt, Anne with Mary and the child Jesus, three generations in one composition. It appears across German, Flemish and Italian art from the fourteenth century, and its popularity reflects a specific devotional interest in Mary's own family and childhood, none of which the gospels supply. The material came from the apocrypha and was elaborated for a thousand years. Anne became the patron of miners, of childless couples and of grandmothers, and gave her name to a very large share of European women. Luther, who had vowed himself to her in a thunderstorm, later attacked her cult specifically. The compound Annarose belongs to the American Catholic naming of the 1920s, and pairs the grandmother with a Marian emblem.
Meaning
Hebrew Hannah, favor or grace, with Rose
Anna is the Greek form of Hebrew Hannah, from a root meaning favor or grace. Rose is from Latin rosa, and in Catholic naming it usually carries the Marian title Rosa Mystica rather than the flower as such. The compound is an American formation of the early twentieth century, concentrated in Irish and Italian Catholic families. It peaks in 1924.
