Where it comes from

The story of Lamiya

Classical Arabic poetry needed to describe a beloved in detail, in a tradition where the description was conventional and the skill lay in the handling, and the language developed an unusually precise vocabulary for it. Lama is the natural darkness of the lips. Hawar is the sharp contrast between the white and the dark of the eye, giving the name Hawra. Kahil describes eyelids that appear lined with kohl naturally, giving Kahil and Kohl-related names. Ghayda is a woman's soft, swaying gait. Dima is a steady gentle rain, used as a compliment. Because the vocabulary is so fine-grained, a large number of these words became personal names, and a great many Arabic women's names therefore denote a single specific physical feature rather than a general quality. English has almost nothing comparable and has to reach for adjectives that cover far more ground.

Arabic lama, darkness of the lips

Lamiya is generally derived from Arabic lamya or lamia, describing a woman with dark, full lips, from lama, a darkness of the inner lip regarded as a mark of beauty. An unrelated Greek Lamia, a child-devouring figure of myth, shares the spelling and has no connection. The American peak is 2011.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lamiya went to 10 girls in 2025, but Lamiyah, Lamya and Lamia and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 67, which makes it the 893rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,564 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,989 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Lamiya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mia works as a short form and is a very familiar name.
  • Three syllables with clear middle stress.
  • Every sound in it exists in English.
What to consider
  • A Greek monster shares the spelling in its shorter form.
  • Lamya and Lamia are both commoner transliterations.
  • The specific meaning is unfamiliar to English speakers.
