The -iyah ending is a real piece of Arabic grammar with a specific job. Called the nisba, it turns a noun into an adjective of belonging: Misr is Egypt, Misriyya is Egyptian. It always needs something to belong to, and in Lamiyah there is nothing for it to attach to.

How old is the name Lamiyah?

When was the name Lamiyah most popular?

Where it comes from

Our story of Lamiyah

Arabic builds a great deal from a small number of patterns, and the nisba is one of the most productive: attach -ī to a masculine noun and -iyya to a feminine one, and you get the adjective of belonging. Baghdad gives Baghdadi. Nūr, light, gives Nūriyya, luminous. The suffix is so regular that Arabic speakers can form it on any noun and be understood. American naming borrowed the sound of it in the 1990s and 2000s, largely through Aaliyah, and applied it to created stems: Lamiyah, Zamiyah, Kamiyah, Damiyah. The ending remains recognizable as Arabic while doing none of the grammatical work it exists for, which is a fair description of what happens whenever one language borrows another's morphology without its syntax. Lamiyah peaks in 2012.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No inherited meaning. The suffix -iyya, written -iyah in English, is the feminine nisba in Arabic, forming adjectives of relation from nouns: Aaliyah from ʿalī, high; Sumayyah from a diminutive; Nooriyah from nūr, light. La- or Lam- supplies no Arabic noun for the suffix to operate on, so the compound is an American formation using an Arabic-looking ending. It has no documented reading.

Lamiyah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2012, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lamiyah went to 14 girls in 2025, but Lamya, Lamia and Lamiya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 67, which makes it the 893rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,598 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,989 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Lamiyah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is soft, flowing and easy to say in English.
  • Mia works as a short form and stands alone.
  • The ending sits in a large, familiar current sound family.
What to consider
  • Lamiya, Lamia and Lameeyah all compete for the same sound.
  • The Arabic-looking ending does not carry an Arabic meaning here.
  • The pronunciation of the middle vowel varies between families.
