Where it comes from

The story of Lamya

The pre-Islamic ode, the qasida, had a conventional structure and a conventional vocabulary, and the description of the beloved was one of its fixed sections. That produced a highly specified aesthetic vocabulary that later became a name pool: Lamya, Hawra, Ghayda, Rasha, a young gazelle, and Hind, whose sense is disputed. The adjectives follow a grammatical pattern reserved in Arabic for colors and physical qualities — the same pattern that gives aḥmar, red, and aswad, black — which is why they are recognizable as a class to any Arabic speaker. The American figures for Lamya peak in 2007.

Meaning

Arabic "having darkened lips"

From Arabic lamyāʾ, the feminine of alma, describing lips with a dark or brownish tint, considered a mark of beauty in classical description. It belongs to a set of adjectives in the same grammatical pattern used for physical features: aḥwar and ḥawrāʾ for eyes of strong black-and-white contrast, aghyad and ghaydāʾ for a soft and supple body. The pattern itself is what marks these as descriptive adjectives rather than ordinary nouns.

Lamya sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 162 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lamya went to 14 girls in 2025, but Lamiyah, Lamia and Lamiya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 67, which makes it the 893rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,598 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,989 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Lamya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • Mia is an immediate short form that stands alone.
  • It is short, two syllables and easy to say.
What to consider
  • The spelling Lamia coincides with a Greek monster of the same name.
  • English speakers add a syllable the Arabic does not have.
  • It is rare in the United States and will need spelling out.
