Korina writes the Greek poet's name with the letter Greek actually used. Korinna is spelled with a kappa, and Latin turned every kappa into a C, which is why English has Corinna, Cyrus and Cynthia rather than Korinna, Kyros and Kynthia. The K spelling is closer to the source, whatever it looks like.

Where it comes from

The story of Korina

Korinna of Tanagra was a Greek lyric poet whose dates are genuinely disputed — fifth century or third — and about whom a tradition grew up that she defeated Pindar in competition. Ovid then used Corinna as the name of the beloved in the Amores, which carried the Latin spelling into European literature. German and the Slavic languages, which transliterate Greek directly rather than through Latin, use Korinna and Korina. The American 1995 peak reflects both that continental spelling and the general 1990s preference for K over C.

Meaning

Greek "maiden", a diminutive of kore

From korē, a girl or maiden, with a diminutive ending. Korē is also a title of Persephone and the term for the archaic Greek statues of standing young women. The etymology is settled. The K is the original letter; the C is Latin's substitution, which English inherited without thinking about it.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Korina went to 15 girls in 2025, but Corina, Corinna and Corrina and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 108, which makes it the 852nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,281 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 14,882 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Korina itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The K spelling is closer to the Greek original than the standard C.
  • It has a real historical poet behind it rather than a mythological figure.
  • Kora and Kori are both established short forms.
What to consider
  • Corinna and Corina are the more familiar English spellings.
  • It will be assumed to be a K-respelling rather than a continental one.
  • Korina, Corina, Korinna and Corinna all coexist.
