The story of Corina
Kore was the safer way to refer to Persephone, whose actual name was avoided in some contexts because of her association with the dead. The word also names a whole genre of archaic Greek sculpture — the korai of the Athenian Acropolis, buried after the Persian sack and dug up in the nineteenth century with their paint still on them. Corina is the Romanian, Spanish and German spelling of the name built on it.
Meaning

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Corina went to 37 girls in 2025, but Corinna, Corrina and Korina and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 108, which makes it the 852nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,051 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 14,882 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 43,440 for Corina itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Leisa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Corina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leisa climbed just as high around 1958, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leisa's path sketches the road Corina is walking now.
Corina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
