The story of Sonja
Sofia was a major name in the Eastern church and became one of the great Russian names. Russian nicknaming produced Sonya as its standard familiar form, and nineteenth-century Russian novels carried it into English reading. Scandinavia borrowed it and spelled it Sonja, and Norwegian royalty carried it into the twentieth century. American use rose through the 1930s and peaked in the mid-1960s.
Meaning
wisdom
Through Sofia, from the Greek sophia, 'wisdom' — the word behind philosophy, which is love of it. The great church in Constantinople, Hagia Sophia, is dedicated to Holy Wisdom rather than to a saint of that name, which is the clearest statement of what the word meant to the people using it.

The Virgie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sonja's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Virgie climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Virgie's path sketches the road Sonja is walking now.
Sonja sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off

- It is a living name in Norwegian, German, Russian and Dutch alike.
- Sofia stands behind it as a formal form used across the whole of Europe.
- The j is not an English spelling convention, so English readers who have not met the name may misread it.
- Sonja and Sonya are both established and neither is dominant.
