Corrina goes back to a Greek poet. Korinna of Tanagra wrote in the fifth or third century BC — the dating is genuinely disputed — and a tradition, probably invented later, has her defeating Pindar in competition five times. Her name is one of the few classical women's names that comes from a writer rather than from a myth.

Where it comes from

The story of Corrina

Ovid used Corinna as the name of the beloved in the Amores, which carried it into European love poetry — Herrick's Corinna's Going a-Maying is the best-known English instance. That kept it alive as a literary name for centuries without it ever becoming common. Its twentieth-century American use has a different source: the folk and blues song Corrina, Corrina, recorded repeatedly from 1928 onward and a hit several times over, which put the doubled-r spelling into wide circulation. The 1974 peak follows that line rather than the Greek one.

Meaning

Greek "maiden", a diminutive of kore

From Greek korē, a girl or maiden, with the diminutive suffix -inna. Korē is also a title of Persephone and the term for the standing female statues of archaic Greece. The etymology is settled. The Latin spelling Corinna, with one r, is the standard one; the doubled r is an English and American variant that does not reflect the Greek.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The doubled r has no effect in English. Greek would stress the first syllable, KO-rin-na, which is not how the name has been said in English for centuries.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Corrina went to 15 girls in 2025, but Corina, Corinna and Korina and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 108, which makes it the 852nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,281 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 14,882 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Corrina itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It has a real historical poet behind it, not a mythological figure.
  • Cora and Cori are both established short forms with their own histories.
  • The rhythm matches Katrina and Sabrina, so it is instantly sayable.
What to consider
  • Corinna with one r is the historically correct spelling.
  • Corina, Corinna, Korinna and Corrina all coexist.
  • The 1970s peak dates the doubled-r spelling specifically.
