Where it comes from

The story of Keivon

Planet-naming is one of the clearest cases of cultural translation in the ancient world. Babylonian astronomers assigned the visible planets to gods; Greeks matched them to their own — the star of Kronos, of Zeus, of Ares — and Romans translated again to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. Persian took a partly independent route, keeping Keyvan from a Mesopotamian source for Saturn while naming Mars Bahram after a Zoroastrian figure of victory and Venus Nahid after Anahita. India did the same with Shani, Mangala and Shukra. The names are still ordinary personal names in each of those languages. The American figures for Keivon peak in 2000.

Persian "Saturn"; or a modern American coinage

Persian Keyvan names the planet Saturn, borrowed ultimately from Akkadian kaiamanu, the steady one, an appropriate name for the slowest-moving visible planet. The American Keivon is more likely a formation on the Ke- prefix with the -von ending, on the model of Devon and Kevon. The two are unrelated and the spelling does not distinguish them.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keivon went to 10 boys in 2025, but Keyvon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 26, which makes it the 902nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,777 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 65,695 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 170,808 for Keivon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Persian reading is settled and unusually striking: a planet.
  • Von and Kev are ready short forms.
  • It is read correctly on sight by English speakers.
What to consider
  • Two unrelated origins produce nearly the same spelling.
  • Persian and American speakers stress it differently.
  • Kevon and Keyvan are competing spellings.
