Where it comes from

Our story of Keyvon

Two things arrived at these letters in the same decade. Iranian migration after 1979 brought Persian names into American records in numbers — Kian, Arman, Sina, Keyvan — and Keyvan is among the ordinary ones. At the same time the -von ending was fully productive in American naming, generating Davon, Javon, Trevon, Rayvon and Keyvon from a Key- opening that was itself in wide use through Keyon and Keon. The result is a spelling that a Persian family and a family with no Persian connection would both plausibly write. The 2000 peak sits at the end of the -von family's run, which is where the weight of the American record probably lies.

Saturn, if from the Persian Keyvan

Persian Keyvan is the name of the planet Saturn, borrowed through Aramaic from Akkadian Kayamānu, the steady one — that reading is settled for Keyvan. Separately, Keyvon fits the American -von family alongside Davon, Javon and Rayvon, none of which has a documented source. The spelling matches both and the record does not distinguish.

Keyvon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2000, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keyvon went to 16 boys in 2025, but Keivon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 26, which makes it the 902nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,706 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 65,695 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 106,755 for Keyvon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
