The story of Georgie
Saint George was a soldier martyred under Diocletian, and the dragon arrived in his legend a thousand years later; the crusaders brought his cult to England and he became its patron. Six English kings and a whole American state carry the name. The -ie form was ordinary in speech for centuries and was registered as a full name in America in the nineteenth century, when diminutives were being written down freely; Georgie peaks in 1902 for boys. It is also used for girls, as a short form of Georgia and Georgina, and that use has grown while the boys' has faded.
Meaning

From Greek geōrgos, a farmer, from gē, earth, and ergon, work. The reading is settled and undisputed. Georgie is the English affectionate form, made with the -ie suffix, and carries the full name's meaning; the ending adds nothing but warmth.
