The Germanic naming pool was martial throughout, and it was applied to daughters as freely as to sons. Gertrude is ger, spear, plus thrud, strength. Hildegard is hild, battle, plus gard, enclosure. Matilda is maht, might, plus hild, battle. Brunhild is brynja, armor, plus hild again. Griselda contains hild too. Rosalind, despite appearances, is probably hros, horse, plus lind, shield of lime-wood. The system was not describing the child; it was assembling prestige words in pairs, and the prestige words of an early medieval warrior aristocracy were weapons, battles and rule. What is worth noticing is that nobody found this strange enough to keep the weapons for boys. The elements combine freely and the sex of the name is carried by the ending, not by the vocabulary.
