Len
Masculine · “Latin leo and Germanic hard”
Len is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 4,514 boys against 102 girls since 1880.
A short form is deliberately ambiguous. Len can stand for Leonard, for Leon, for Lennox or for Leland, and that is a feature rather than a defect: an English nickname conceals which formal name is behind it, in a society where the formal name announced class, religion and country.

The story of Len
English clipping produces a small stock of short forms that each cover several full names, and the ambiguity does real work. Al is Albert, Alan, Alfred, Alexander and Aloysius. Ed is Edward, Edwin, Edgar and Edmund. Bert is Albert, Herbert, Hubert, Bertram and Gilbert. Nell was Helen and Eleanor. This mattered in a nineteenth-century society where a formal name was a social signal: Aloysius announced Catholic, Ebenezer announced Nonconformist, Percival announced pretension. The clip removed all of it. What is unusual about the American record around 1885 is how many of these short forms were registered as full legal names rather than kept for private use, which is why Len, Wess, Zan and Jo all appear in the same rank band and the same decade.

Latin leo and Germanic hard, lion-brave
Len is most commonly a short form of Leonard, from Old High German Leonhard, joining Latin leo, lion, to hard, brave. It equally serves Leon, from Greek leon, lion, Lennox, a Scottish place name, and Leland, an English one. The American record cannot distinguish which parent name a bearer had. The peak is 1885.

The trade-off
- Three letters and one syllable, as short as a name gets.
- Several formal names are available behind it.
- There is no possible mispronunciation.
- It reads as a short form rather than a full name.
- The 1885 peak places it deep in the nineteenth century.
- Which parent name it stands for is not recoverable.
