Where it comes from

The story of Desmon

Ireland's four provinces are Munster, Leinster, Connacht and Ulster, and three of those names end in a Norse element. Mumhan, Laighin and Ulaidh are the Irish tribal names; Norse settlers added stadr, a place, which anglicized as -ster. So Munster is the place of the Mumu, Leinster the place of the Laigin, Ulster the place of the Ulaid. Connacht escaped, keeping its Irish form because it had no comparable Norse coastal presence. The Irish word for a province, cuige, means a fifth, which preserves the memory of a fifth province, Mide, absorbed into the others. Desmond is a subdivision of one of them, and the earldom that carried the name was destroyed in the Desmond Rebellions of the 1570s and 1580s, after which the territory was confiscated and planted.

Desmon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 51 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Desmon went to 8 boys in 2025, but Dezmon is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 14, which makes it the 914th most-given boys’ name of the year — 7,996 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 122,005 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 213,510 for Desmon itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
