Where it comes from

The story of Alois

Chlodovech was king of the Franks from 481 and converted to Nicene Christianity around 496, which aligned the Frankish monarchy with the Gallo-Roman church and shaped the next thousand years of French history. His name went through Latin as Chlodovechus and then Ludovicus, and French produced two outcomes from it: Clovis, kept as a historical form for the early Merovingians, and Louis, used for everyone from Louis the Pious onward. German kept Ludwig, Italian produced Luigi and Ludovico, Spanish Luis, Hungarian Lajos. Aloysius is a further step: an Italian Latinization of Luigi made in the sixteenth century for scholarly and religious use, which then traveled back into German and Czech as Alois. Four European languages therefore carry four unrecognizable versions of one Frankish king's name.

Meaning

Germanic hlod and wig, fame and battle

Alois is the German and Czech form of Aloysius, a Latinization of Italian Luigi, which is Louis, from Frankish Chlodovech, joining hlod, fame or glory, to wig, battle. The Latin form was popularized by St Aloysius Gonzaga, who died in 1591. The same Frankish name is written Clovis for the fifth-century king and Ludwig in German. The American peak is 1891.

Alois sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 106 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.
