Where it comes from

The story of Winfield

Winfield began as a place name, became a surname for the families who came from those places, and crossed to America with them. Its use as a given name in the nineteenth century owes a great deal to Winfield Scott, the general who commanded the United States Army for two decades and was known to a whole generation — American families named sons after prominent soldiers as a matter of course. The name stood in the top hundred and twenty for boys in 1880 and faded with the practice.

pasture field

Two readings of the first element. It may be the Old English personal name Wina, giving 'Wina's field'. It may instead be the Old English winn, 'meadow' or 'pasture', giving a description rather than an owner. Both are standard accounts of the place names, which appear in several English counties.

How the name formed

Winfield sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 120 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete and easy to picture, whichever of the two readings applies.
  • Win is an unusually cheerful short form to have available.
  • It carries a specific and documented piece of nineteenth-century American history.
What to consider
  • The first element is genuinely ambiguous between a person and a pasture.
  • It is a long, formal-sounding name that is firmly period-coded to the 1800s.
