The story of Davie
The hexagram is an ancient geometric figure and appears in many cultures with no Jewish meaning at all. Its specifically Jewish use is late. The Jewish community of Prague was granted a flag bearing it in the fourteenth century, and from there it spread through central European communities as a communal emblem, gradually acquiring the name Magen David, the shield of David. Nineteenth-century emancipation is what fixed it: Jewish communities building synagogues alongside churches wanted a symbol answering the cross, and the hexagram was available and already in use. Zionism adopted it, and it is now on the flag of Israel. The menorah, by contrast, is genuinely ancient and described in Exodus, which is why it remains the emblem of the state rather than of the flag.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Davie is a Scottish and northern English familiar form of David. The meaning of David is genuinely unknown. It is often glossed as beloved, from a Hebrew root d-w-d, but that reading is not established and a connection to a west Semitic word for a chieftain has also been proposed. The American peak of this spelling is 1885.
