The story of Dezmon
Munster was divided into Thomond, the north, and Desmond, the south, and the Norman-Irish FitzGeralds who held the southern lordship became the earls of Desmond, one of the most powerful families in medieval Ireland until the Desmond rebellions destroyed them in the sixteenth century. The place name became a surname for people from the region and then, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a given name, which is the usual sequence. It is one of a small set of Irish given names that are geography rather than people: Munster, Connacht and Ulster did not make the transition, but Desmond did, and most of the men who carry it have no idea they are named after a quarter of a province.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
