The story of Candido
Candidus meant a bright, shining white, as against albus, which was a plain matt white, and it carried associations of purity and clarity that survive in English candor and candid, meaning frankness rather than color. A Roman seeking office had his toga treated with chalk to make it conspicuously white, and he was therefore a candidatus, a man in white, which is why every modern election runs on a Latin word about laundry. The same root gives candle, from candere, to glow, and incandescent. The personal name came into Christian use through martyrs called Candidus and remains ordinary in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, where the meaning is still transparent to speakers in a way it is not in English.
