Where it comes from

The story of Sandeep

Deepa is the small clay oil lamp that sits in doorways, on windowsills and in temples across India, and the word runs through a great many names: Deepak, Deepa, Dipti, Pradeep, Sandeep. Once a year it becomes the whole point. Diwali takes its name from deepavali, a row of lamps, and households set out lines of them along walls and roofs until whole streets are outlined in flame. The festival is kept by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists for different reasons on the same nights, which is itself unusual. Sandeep traveled out of Punjab and northern India with families who settled in Britain, East Africa, Canada and the United States, and it is given to sons and daughters alike, which the American record confirms.

Meaning

lit up, bearing a lamp

The name joins a prefix meaning with or complete to deepa, a lamp. The reading is standard across northern India and is not disputed.

Two syllables with the weight on the second. The first vowel is the u of sun rather than the a of sand, which is the one thing American readers get wrong.

Sandeep sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 33 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Sandeep sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, concrete and lovely to explain: a lit lamp.
  • Sandy and Deep are both ready as short forms, one for English settings and one for home.
  • It is used for sons and daughters alike, so it does not close a door.
What to consider
  • Americans will read the first syllable as sand, and the correction becomes routine.
  • Sandip and Sandeep are both standard transliterations, so the spelling will be queried by people who know the name well.
  • Most children with this spelling are boys, but a real minority are girls; either may be taken for the other.
