The story of Amit
The negative prefix is one of the most stable pieces of Indo-European inheritance. In Sanskrit it is a- before consonants and an- before vowels; in Greek the same, giving atheist and anarchy; in Latin it became in-, giving invisible and inept; in Germanic it became un-. English has all three because it inherited un- and borrowed the other two, which is why we have unable, inability and anaemic in one vocabulary. The root behind Amit is equally widespread: ma, to measure, gives Sanskrit mita, Greek metron and English meter, meter, measure, immense and moon, which was named as the measurer of months. So the name is built from two pieces both of which survive in English, in a form no English speaker would recognize. Amita is more common as the feminine, and the masculine Amit is standard in Hindi and Bengali.
Meaning
Sanskrit amita, boundless or immeasurable
From Sanskrit a-, not, and mita, measured, from the root ma, to measure, which also gives English meter and measure through Greek and Latin. Amita means immeasurable or infinite, and appears in Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light. Amit is separately a modern Hebrew name meaning colleague or comrade, and the two are unrelated. It peaks in the American data in 1983.
