Where it comes from

The story of Jarrett

Gerard came to England with the Normans and was worn down in English speech to Garrett and Jarrett, both of which became surnames. The surname crossed into American given-name use in the twentieth century, and Jarrett rose through the 1970s and 1980s, peaking in the early 1990s alongside Jarrod and Garrett.

Meaning

brave spear

Through Garrett and Gerard, from the Germanic ger, 'spear', and hard, 'brave' or 'hardy'. The ger element also opens Gerald and Gertrude; hard ends Richard and Bernard. Garrett is the medieval English development of Gerard, and Jarrett writes its initial sound phonetically.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jarrett went to 57 boys in 2025, but Jaret and Jarett are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 82, which makes it the 846th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,544 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 20,830 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,966 for Jarrett itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both elements of the underlying compound are documented and the meaning is coherent.
  • The J makes the soft initial sound unambiguous, which Garrett does not.
  • Rhett is available as a short form with an independent record.
What to consider
  • Garrett is commoner and the two are easily confused.
  • It is closely dated to the 1990s in American records.
