Where it comes from

The story of Blaize

Blaise was said to have saved a boy choking on a fishbone, and his feast on 3 February still involves the blessing of throats with crossed candles. That his name means 'lisping' and he became patron of throats is a coincidence the tradition never remarks on. Blaize appears in American records in current use.

Meaning

lisping, stammering

From the Latin blaesus, 'lisping' or 'stammering', a Roman cognomen. Saint Blaise is patron of throat illnesses, and his feast involves blessing throats with crossed candles. The English word 'blaze' is unrelated. The Latin is documented.

Blaize sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2013, with 97 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Blaize went to 57 boys in 2025, but Blaise and Blayze are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 306, which makes it the 638th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,752 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 5,582 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,966 for Blaize itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That the throat-saint's name means 'lisping' is a first-rate coincidence.
  • The candle blessing on his feast is a genuine surviving custom.
  • One syllable, sharp, and never mispronounced.
What to consider
  • Blaise is the standard French and English spelling.
  • The English 'blaze' is unrelated and identical in sound.
  • The literal meaning is unflattering.
