Where it comes from

The story of Blayze

Saint Blaise was an Armenian bishop whose cult spread widely in medieval Europe, and Blaise, Biagio and Blas all descend from his name. Quite separately, English had its own word for a bright fire. The Blaze and Blayze spellings of recent American records draw on the word, while keeping enough of the older name's shape to inherit some of its respectability — a genuinely useful ambiguity, and one worth understanding before choosing it.

Meaningscholars disagree

flame, or lisping

The English word blaze is Old English, a torch or a bright fire. The name Blaise is from Latin Blasius, generally read as built on blaesus, lisping or stammering — an unflattering Roman byname that became respectable through a fourth-century saint. The modern spelling stands between them.

Blayze sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2014, with 69 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Blayze went to 36 boys in 2025, but Blaise and Blaize are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 306, which makes it the 638th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,602 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 5,582 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 47,447 for Blayze itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and no ambiguity in the sound; everyone can say it at first sight.
  • A genuine medieval saint's name stands behind the sound, giving it more history than it looks to have.
  • It has a very clear and vivid image attached to it.
What to consider
  • Blaze is the standard modern spelling and Blaise the historical one; this is neither.
  • A fire word as a name is a strong statement and will be remarked on.
  • The meaning of the older name — lisping — is not what most people expect.
