Blaise is the French form of a name carried across medieval Europe by one saint and into modern thought by one mathematician, and it has stayed one clean syllable through all of it. It arrives in English fully assembled — one beat, a soft opening and a buzzing z at the end — with nothing to trim and nothing to add.

Where it comes from

The story of Blaise

The Latin name Blasius belonged to a bishop of Sebaste in Cappadocia who was martyred in the early fourth century; as Saint Blaise he became one of the most widely venerated saints of medieval Europe, invoked against ailments of the throat, and his feast is still marked in the Catholic calendar on the third of February. That devotion scattered his name across the continent in local dress — Biagio in Italy, Blas in Spain, Balázs in Hungary — while French speakers settled on Blaise. Thirteenth-century Arthurian romance gave the name to Blaise, the scribe who set down Merlin's deeds, and the seventeenth-century mathematician and writer Blaise Pascal fixed the French spelling in the wider imagination. It reached American records early in the twentieth century and has held a quiet, unbroken place since.

Meaning

lisping, stammering

From Latin blaesus, a descriptive nickname that became the Roman family name Blasius. Like many Roman cognomina, it began as a physical observation and long ago stopped functioning as one.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Blaise went to 213 boys in 2025, but Blaize and Blayze are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 306, which makes it the 638th most-given boys’ name of the year — 400 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 5,582 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 8,019 for Blaise itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable with a clear ending, which sits easily against longer or multi-syllable surnames.
  • Recognized across Catholic Europe in local forms — Biagio, Blas, Balázs — so relatives abroad will usually place it.
  • A documented line running from late antiquity through medieval romance to Blaise Pascal, without a gap.
  • Short enough that it needs no nickname, and holds up unshortened from the playground to a signature.
What to consider
  • It is a homophone of the English word blaze, so expect the spellings Blaze and Blaize to come back at you on forms and rosters. Saying "Blaise with an i-s-e" will become routine.
  • In US records it sits firmly on the boys' side, and it has stayed there — the French form has not developed the girls' usage that some saints' names have.
  • Rare enough that a child will likely be the only one in a school, which means introductions are easy to remember but the name will rarely be guessed correctly on first hearing.
  • The saint connection is strongest in Catholic families; elsewhere the name mostly reads as French and literary, which is a fine place for it to land.
