Where it comes from

The story of Blaise

Saint Blaise was an Armenian bishop and physician of the fourth century whose cult spread widely in medieval Europe — he is invoked against throat ailments, and the blessing of throats on his feast day is still practiced. The name became Blaise in French, Biagio in Italian and Blas in Spanish. Its use for girls is recent and American, and it is helped along by the resemblance to the word blaze.

Meaningscholars disagree

lisping, stammering

The usual derivation takes Blasius from Latin blaesus, lisping, an ordinary Roman descriptive byname. Other readings have been proposed and none is settled. The English word blaze, a fire, is a separate word and not the source.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented saint's name with a genuinely long European history.
  • One syllable and six letters, easy to say and quick to learn.
  • The French spelling is more distinctive than the word-name Blaze.
What to consider
  • Everyone will hear the English word blaze, which is a separate word entirely.
  • The name is used for men in France, and for boys in America too, so forms may guess wrong.
  • The Latin meaning is a speech impediment, which is not what most people expect.
