Where it comes from

The story of Amada

Latin amata was used as a name in Rome — the wife of Latinus in the Aeneid carries it — and Spanish and Portuguese kept the participle as Amada and Amado. It was well used in Spain and Mexico through the nineteenth century and appears in American records from the same period with Hispanic families. The related Amadis gave its name to a chivalric romance that Cervantes' Don Quixote had read too many times.

Meaning

beloved

From Latin amata, the feminine past participle of amare, to love; Spanish kept the form unchanged. The related Amadeo means one who loves God, and Amadis was a hero of medieval Spanish romance.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning of unusual directness and warmth.
  • Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at first sight.
  • Five letters and three open syllables, easy to say.
What to consider
  • A name that says beloved is a statement the child will hear discussed.
  • Amanda is far more common in English and will be assumed.
  • It is close to Amada, Amara and Amaya, which are separate names.
