Where it comes from

Our story of Allura

Ours, offered as ours. The word behind this name comes from falconry, which is a better history than it needs. A lure was the feathered device a falconer swung to bring a hawk back out of the sky, and to allure was to draw a bird in with it. French passed the word to English in the fourteenth century and it lost the hawk and kept the pull. Allura adds an ending that makes it a name. The falconer is still faintly in there.

Meaningscholars disagree

attraction, enticement

The English allure comes from Old French aleurer, to attract, built on loire, a falconer's lure. Whether the name was formed from it deliberately or built on the -ura ending of modern naming is not documented, and the name is not attested before the twentieth century.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Allura went to 43 girls in 2025, but Alura is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 67, which makes it the 893rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,624 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 23,989 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 37,378 for Allura itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Allie is a plain short form that works at any age.
  • The word behind it has a genuinely good history in falconry.
  • Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.
What to consider
  • The word means enticement, which is a particular thing to name a daughter.
  • Allura, Alura and Alora are all in use and none is dominant.
  • There is no documented meaning for the name as such, only for the word behind it.
