The story of Deni
A saint who carries his own head is called a cephalophore and there are dozens of them in European hagiography, which suggests the motif traveled rather than the event. Denis was one of seven bishops sent to Gaul in the third century, was executed with two companions on the hill above Paris, and the walking legend appears several centuries later. The abbey built at the endpoint became Saint-Denis, and from the seventh century almost every French monarch was buried there. The name Dionysius was extremely common in the early church despite naming a pagan god, which is a good reminder that early Christians did not systematically avoid such names. The god's own name resists explanation: the first element is Zeus, and nobody has settled what the second is, though it appears in Mycenaean Greek and so is very old.
Meaning
Greek Dionysos, the god of wine
Denis descends from Dionysius, belonging to Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and ecstatic religion, whose own name contains dios, of Zeus, and a second element that is not explained. Denis of Paris, a third-century bishop, is the patron of France. Deni is a modern American spelling of Denise or Denny with an -i ending. It peaks in 1974.
