The story of Lazaro
The Hebrew name Elʿazar was clipped by Greek speakers to Lazaros, and it is in that form that the name reaches the Gospels — Lazarus of Bethany in John, and the beggar Lazarus in the parable told in Luke. From Greek it passed into Latin as Lazarus, and from Latin into the Romance languages: Lázaro in Spanish and Portuguese, Lazzaro in Italian. Spanish devotion to San Lázaro carried the name across the Atlantic, where it took particularly deep root in Cuba, and in the United States it is strongest today in the states with the largest Cuban and Mexican communities. The Slavic branch of the same name, Lazar, has its own long history in the Balkans.

Pronouncing Lazaro
LAH-sah-ro
Stress falls on the first syllable — that is exactly what the written accent in Spanish Lázaro marks. English speakers meeting it cold often shift the stress to the middle (luh-ZAR-oh), so expect to correct that now and then.

The Brion test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lazaro's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brion climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brion's path sketches the road Lazaro is walking now.
Lazaro sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Fully at home in both Spanish and English, with the same spelling working in each and no translation needed between grandparents and teachers.
- A documented line running from Hebrew through Greek and Latin into Spanish, which is about as long a record as a name can have.
- Short forms already in real use — Laz in English, Lazo and Lazarito in Spanish — so nothing has to be invented.
- Familiar in sound without being common in practice; most people have heard Lazarus and will not stumble over the idea of the name.
- The accent mark of Spanish Lázaro tends to fall off in American paperwork, and once it is gone the stress cue is gone with it. Many families simply accept the unaccented spelling and correct the pronunciation by ear.
- The biblical Lazarus is the man raised from the dead, and the name still carries that story — it turns up in phrases like the Lazarus effect. Some families welcome the association; it is worth deciding how you feel about it rather than meeting it later.
- Outside Texas, Florida, California and other areas with large Spanish-speaking communities, expect to spell it and say it twice on first meeting.
