The Zeppelins were a noble family of the German southwest long before anyone flew. Ferdinand von Zeppelin's rigid airships, first launched in 1900, turned the surname into an ordinary English word for a certain kind of enormous, quiet flying machine. In 1968 the English band Led Zeppelin took the word for a stage name and made it something people shouted rather than read.
