Trenton
Masculine · “Trent's town”
Trenton is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 58,557 boys against 78 girls since 1880.
Trenton began as a place name: the New Jersey settlement that grew around the landholding of the colonial merchant William Trent, "Trent's town" worn down over time into a single word. It was the town Washington's army crossed the Delaware to take in the winter of 1776, which is how a small river port on the Delaware became a word Americans recognize on sight. Said aloud it lands in two even beats, with the ready-made short form Trent sitting inside it.

The story of Trenton
The line starts with a river. The Trent runs across the English Midlands, and its name gave rise to an English surname carried by families who lived near it. One bearer of that surname, the colonial merchant William Trent, held land on the Delaware in the early eighteenth century, and the town that grew there became Trent-town, then Trenton — later the capital of New Jersey and the site of one of the Revolution's turning points. From there it followed the familiar American route by which place names and surnames become first names, joining the broad family of two-syllable boys' names ending in -on.

The Bobbie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Trenton's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bobbie climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bobbie's path sketches the road Trenton is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds, and already known to anyone who has seen a US map — rarely needs repeating or correcting.
- Comes with Trent built in: a short form that has stood on its own as a name for generations.
- Fits the well-worn pattern of two-syllable -on names without being one of the ones heard constantly.
- Carries a real slice of American history, from an eighteenth-century river port to a Revolutionary battle.
- It is a city first for many people, and a state capital with a mixed public reputation. Some will hear the place before the person, especially in the Northeast.
- Most people carrying it now are young adults, so it can read as belonging to a particular stretch of decades rather than to no time at all.
- Expect Trent to do a lot of the work. If you want the full three syllables used, you may find yourself gently insisting on it.
